Epilogue. Drifting to Drafting - Pen Artist Ha-jung Lee Series

[This is the final episode of the 'Pen Artist Ha-jung Lee' series.]

The day after I resolved to build a "real brand" of my own.

To break free from the cycle of churning out hollow content while trapped in my room, the first thing I did was place a small stopwatch on my desk.

Back in London’s museums, I promised myself I’d never blame inefficiency, even if a single drawing took hours to finish. But to survive as a professional in the reality of Seoul, I needed a different attitude. Taking eight hours to do a four-hour job just to satisfy my own perfectionism—while getting paid and keeping clients waiting—was hardly professional.

The stopwatch wasn't a tool to restrict me; it was training to protect my absolute time as a creator. I had to finish commissioned work efficiently within a set timeframe, so I could dedicate the remaining hours entirely to drawing my own vision. Watching the numbers tick by, I began to strike a balance between art and business, creativity and professionalism.

Instinct

Once the stopwatch carved out some margin in my schedule, an instinct I had long ignored began to surface.

I was never meant to be someone who sat passively holding a pen, waiting for orders. Looking back to my teens, I was a proactive planner, organizing and running a 3,000-person conference with friends and bringing people together.

After spending nearly 10 years in corporate environments solving other people's problems, I had completely forgotten that I was someone whose heart beat fastest when setting the stage and running the show myself.

I thought I was just drawing alone on the streets of Europe. But looking back, those moments were my most authentic way of connecting with people and the world. Pen drawing wasn't the final destination; it was the sharp tool I wielded to gather people and deliver my narrative.

'Right!'

WRKOmuseum

With that realization, I decided to stop waiting for clients in my room. I packed my laptop and stopwatch and headed to Local Stitch, a coworking space where creators gather.

Mingling with marketers, designers, and developers there opened my eyes. I sparked collaborations across different fields and held offline exhibitions to introduce my work directly to the public. Through this chaotic process of trial and error, the vague vision I had in Europe—"to design Korean culture powerfully"—began to take tangible shape.

That’s how my first brand, WRKOmuseum was born.

Standing for "We Are Korean," this name carries my vision to document Korean culture through pen drawings and build a virtual museum to connect with people worldwide. True to the word "museum," I now plan publications and objects, and design communities, moving forward step by step. Leading my own narrative feels pretty good.

Yes. This is finally me.

Drifting to Drafting

A self-study abroad trip that began with nothing but a camera, a pen, and a notebook. My backpack, which was empty when I boarded the plane, is now filled with a clear answer—my own stage—earned through countless wanderings and mistakes.

The answer wasn't waiting in some distant land. It was the instinct of a planner, my identity as a narrative builder, that was already deeply rooted inside me. The long, solitary journey simply brought it to the surface. Ultimately, my self-study abroad was a time to build the inner strength needed to solidify my creative universe.

Is this how wandering pilgrims reach enlightenment?

The first travelogue of my bold journey with a backpack ends here, with a sense of bittersweetness. Those hours spent holding a pen in the alleys of Europe. Yes, those moments were the time I was unknowingly drawing the map of my life. The journey showed me the path forward when I was lost in the fog.

And now. In the heart of Seoul.

Amidst another foggy path of business and creation, I raise the anchor. To begin my second journey, breathing together with new people, even if it's daunting.

I press the button on the stopwatch. It's time to draw a line again.
