The Final Stage of the Work We Must Ultimately Create (Ford)

1. River Rouge Complex

Address: 3001 Miller Rd, Dearborn, MI 48120

This was no ordinary factory; it was a 665-acre machine and a city in itself. I dug a harbor so massive ships could deliver iron ore, and hauled coal from our own mines directly by rail. I hated waiting for raw materials from across the globe, so I built a self-sufficient system where dirt and stone entered one end and cars rolled out the other. People called it a reckless gamble, but I believed that putting your fate in someone else’s hands was the most dangerous bet of all.

Don’t leave your fate to external factors. Control everything from raw materials to the finished product through vertical integration or by dominating the supply chain. That is the only way to guarantee the quality and price you promised your customers. Independence is the only way to survive.

2. Glass Plant at Rouge

Address: River Rouge Plant

Here, we pioneered a new method to produce glass continuously. In the past, cutting sheet glass meant mountains of waste, but at Rouge, we created a flowing ribbon of glass that reduced waste to nearly zero. I even captured smoke from the chimneys to create chemicals and used waste heat from the furnaces to power generators. Every by-product of a factory is not waste; it is simply a resource we haven’t found a use for yet.

What is being thrown away in your business? Find a way to turn it back into profit. A hatred for waste is the greatest driver of innovation. You need the tenacity to find value even in the trash.

3. Henry Ford Trade School (Former Site)

Address: 2799 W Grand Blvd, Detroit, MI 48202

I despise charity that hands out free money. Instead, I established a school for underprivileged boys and taught them how to work with real machinery. They didn’t make toys; they crafted actual screws and tools for our cars. Even if they produced defects, I paid them a fair wage for their work. Here, they learned the truth that “nothing is free” and discovered the dignity of creating value with their own hands.

True education is in the field, not at a desk. Don’t just give people fish; teach them how to weave the net. Buying their catch at a fair price is the ultimate form of welfare that preserves human dignity.

4. Henry Ford Hospital

Address: 2799 W Grand Blvd, Detroit, MI 48202

I saw no reason why a hospital couldn’t be as efficient as a factory. I made every room a private suite with the same layout — no VIP rooms, no crowded wards. We paid doctors the highest salaries to eliminate any temptation for bribes or unnecessary treatments. My belief was that “a hospital exists to heal the patient, not to serve the doctor’s authority,” and we built a system that provided top-tier medical care at a rational price.

The essence is the same in any field. Strip away the formalities and elitism, and focus solely on providing the best benefit to the “end user.” Whether it’s a hospital, school, or business, efficiency and profit occur when you stay true to the core mission.

5. Fair Lane (Henry Ford Estate)

Address: 1 Fair Lane Dr, Dearborn, MI 48128

Away from the roar of machinery, Fair Lane is where I breathe. I gathered over 500 species of birds here and walked the forest trails with my friend John Burroughs, listening to nature. As much as I obsessed over efficiency, I enjoyed being humble and slow in the presence of nature. I learned here that machines are just imitations of natural laws, and no engine can run forever without returning to the earth to rest.

Business is a means to sustain life, not life itself. After working intensely, immerse yourself in nature. The inspiration found in stillness and rest is what will lead you back to the furnace. Success without balance is just another name for ruin.

Epilogue: An Unfinished Journey

Through this three-day journey, we realize that Henry Ford didn’t just sell cars; he sold a “way of thinking.” His philosophy was always aimed at a world without waste — a world where everyone could prosper.

His life leaves us with a clear message: “Do not be afraid. Start where you are, with what you have. And never stop improving.” Now, it’s your turn.
