I believe the Challenge DNA resides in all of us. Whether by choice or circumstance, when thrust into a new environment, we inevitably rise to the occasion, finding a way to challenge ourselves and prevail.

When people learn I studied in Russia, they often ask, “How did you go there all alone?” I always tell them, “Anyone would adapt and succeed if put in that situation.”

[The Internal Challenge: A Pivot to Purpose]

In my early school years, I was far from a dedicated student — more focused on leading the pack than the classroom. But during my third year of middle school, studying, for some reason, started to look cooler than playing. Above all, I owe this pivot to my parents, whose silent prayers and patience guided me through that tumultuous period and helped me mature quickly.

From that moment, I committed fully. I cut ties with my old crowd, built up my stamina with basketball during lunch, and poured my focus into classes. Since my foundation was virtually nonexistent, I managed a dramatic 70% increase in my grades. What I truly discovered then wasn’t my test score potential, but my innate drive to see things through, no matter the cost.

As I prepared for high school, my mother made a surprising suggestion. I vividly remember sitting at a Dunkin’ Donuts when she asked my 15-year-old self: “How about studying abroad in Russia?”

I chose to go to Russia alone.
